Nebraskan virtual budget carrier Red Way (Lincoln, NE) is scheduled to debut on June 8, 2023, from its home base at Lincoln, NE with charter-by-the-seat flights to Las Vegas Harry Reid and Orlando International, and five more routes to "popular vacation spots" around the country to follow within two weeks, according to an announcement by the airport.
The flights are sold by Red Way, acting as the sales agent on behalf of public charter operator GlobalX Air Tours while GlobalX (G6, Miami International) will be the production carrier, using some of its leased fleet of six A320-200s and five A321-200s, an announcement on the virtual carrier's website said.
According to the website booking engine, the additional routes to follow will include:
- from June 16: 2x weekly to Atlanta Hartsfield Jackson, Dallas/Fort Worth, and Minneapolis St. Paul International;
- from June 24: 2x weekly to Austin-Bergstrom International and Nashville International.
All routes will initially be flown twice weekly, with several later increasing to thrice weekly. Most of the charters will be seasonal, although Las Vegas and Orlando could be operated year-round, depending on demand.
Red Way was a product of "creative problem solving", Lincoln Airport Executive Director David Haring told The Lincoln Journal Star newspaper. Since losing Delta Air Lines at the beginning of 2022, the airport had been trying to land a budget or leisure-focused airline, but "we just weren't getting anywhere, so we started talking about creative options on air service".
Lincoln airport officials contacted GLOBALX Chairman and CEO Ed Wegel, who said he liked what he saw: "We like the demographics. We like the economics. We like the area of the country. We think that this has a great chance of success," he commented. Haring, meanwhile, said the charter flights mark "a new chapter for our airport and our community" and "a tremendous opportunity for our state".
According to the ch-aviation capacities module, Lincoln is currently served only by United Airlines with links to Chicago O'Hare, Denver International, and Houston Intercontinental.
