Enerjet (Calgary) has renamed its tentative ULCC project from Jet Naked (Calgary), to FlyToo (Calgary). Conceived of in 2014, the FlyToo project entails using a trio of B737s to run budget flights throughout Canada. Although the low-cost brand is going to use Enerjet´s existing Air Operator's Certificate, no timeframes concerning the launch have yet been given.
Other competing entrants into the Canadian LCC market include: Canada Jetlines (AU, Toronto Pearson) and NewLeaf (Winnipeg International) (partnering Flair Airlines (F8, Kelowna)).
Start-up carriers have petitioned Justin Trudeau's government to relax laws capping foreign ownership of local commercial airlines from the current 25% to 49%. According to the Financial Post, a sweeping review of the Canada Transportation Act, tabled in Parliament last month, includes a recommendation that the limit be lifted in a bid to lure in capital needed to sustain operations in the difficult Canadian market.
