American Airlines (AA, Dallas/Fort Worth) has taken delivery of its first A321-200neo following the arrival of N400AN (msn 8647) at Pittsburgh International on Friday, February 1.

In a statement, the carrier said the twinjet would undergo pre-service entry checks and modifications in Pittsburgh ahead of its deployment into service on April 2 on flights between Phoenix Sky Harbor and Orlando International.

With the arrival of more jets of the type, service will be expanded to include Phoenix Sky Harbor to each of Anchorage Ted Stevens and Hawaii as well as Los Angeles International to Hawaii.

The CFM International LEAP-1A-powered twinjet is the first of 100 that the carrier has on order from Airbus (AIB, Toulouse Blagnac). They will be used to replace American's outgoing fleet of thirty-four B757-200s. As of January 24, 2019, American Airlines said it expects to take delivery of seventeen A321neo this year followed by fifteen in 2020 and eighteen in 2021.

American Airlines already operates 219 A321ceo alongside forty-eight A320ceo and 131 A319-100s.
