Island Air Service (2O, Kodiak) has been reselected by the United States Department of Transportation (DOT) to provide Essential Air Services (EAS) to communities on Kodiak Island, Alaska. Island Air will provide 2x weekly round trips from Lazy Bay, Amook Bay, Kitoi Bay, Moser Bay, Olga Bay, Port Bailey, Port Williams, Seal Bay, Uganik, West Point, AK and/or Zachar Bay, to Kodiak during the 18-week peak season, with a reduced service for the remainder of the year.
The contract provides subsidies of USD403,209 in the first year, and USD422,488 in the second year. Island Air will carry out the services using 6-seat De Havilland DHC-2 aircraft.
The only other bidder for the service to the eleven bush communities was Andrew Airways (Kodiak), whose own bid came in at under USD190,000 per year. However, in choosing Island Air, the DOT noted that the carrier has already been providing service to the area for many years and has demonstrated reliability. Additionally, Island Air had received a number of letters of support, while Andrew Airways had not received any.
