VECA Airlines (San Salvador International) is being investigated by Costa Rican authorities after suspending operations this month, reports La Nacion. The El Salvadoran carrier's sudden exit from the San José Juan Santamaría – San Salvador International route was apparently done without properly informing the appropriate authorities, leading the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGAC) of Costa Rica to open an investigation. Veca could face fines and, if it resumes ops in the near future, may find it no longer has permission to fly to Costa Rica.
Veca carried out its last commercial flight on January 17 following financial issues. However, Costa Rican regulations call for a 30 day advance notice for changes to flight operations.
Both of VECA's A319-100s have been returned to its lessor AerCap as of January 25.
Avianca (Bogotá) now holds a monopoly on the the San José Juan Santamaría – San Salvador International route through its subsidiary LACSA Costa Rica (San José Juan Santamaría) which offers 3x daily flights.
