Barrier Air (Auckland International) is set to resume service to North Shore, becoming the only scheduled carrier to serve the Auckland urban area facility.
The carrier announced on its Facebook page that flights to Great Barrier Island will resume on September 10, pending regulatory approval. They will be operated 4x weekly using Cessna (single turboprop) 208B Grand Caravan equipment.
The airline terminated the service earlier this year, partly due to a lack of aircraft after it retired its BN-2s and Partenavia P.68s. According to Barrier Air's website, it currently operates Cessna 208B Grand Caravans exclusively.
Barrier Air already serves Great Barrier Island out of Auckland International. Although the two airports serve the same urban area, North Shore is located to the north of Waitematā Harbour and its residents face severe traffic congestion on the way downtown and to the main airport.
North Shore is also a base for multiple helicopter, search-and-rescue, general aviation, and aviation services provider firms.
