A group of US investors, led by US-Brazilian entrepreneur David Neeleman, has firmed up a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed with Airbus during the 2018 Farnborough Air Show.
In a statement, Airbus said the order for sixty A220-300s was finalized during the last week of December. Fulfilment of the order will come via the European manufacturer's upcoming new US assembly facility at Mobile Downtown, Alabama, where construction will begin later this month. A220 deliveries are therefore set to take place from 2021.
The start-up carrier, currently known as Moxy Airways (Salt Lake City), will target service between secondary metropolitan airfields across the United States.
“The A220-300 is the right airplane for a new airline that will be focused on passenger service and satisfaction,” Neeleman said. “With a low cost of operation and spacious cabin, the A220 will allow us to provide passengers with lower fares and a high quality, comfortable flying experience. The A220’s ability to operate profitably in thin, underserved markets across a broad spectrum of ranges is unique”.
